The series sets out to show that a top account is not only about spending: the right start and the right growth paths put you ahead and let you help your alliance on par with whales. Common beginner mistakes: levelling the wrong heroes, spending resources in the wrong place and dropping the account after a day or two.
1. Only a new server
Never join a server that is already a few days old: catching up with those who started earlier is very hard. Wait for a new kingdom to open.
- Just installed the game - play the tutorial until the normal interface shows up.
- Already have an account - Account → Character Management → Create Character and pick the newest kingdom (for the author it was kingdom 51 in the evening and already 59 the next day).

2. The first hours
Skip the dialogues, play the tutorial and do what the game asks. Keep a few free hours for the start: the real game begins once the normal interface and banners appear.
The first thing after the tutorial is the Cursed Forest (the Doctor's Path): start the first quest.
3. Marlena for 1 dollar
After the first battle the game offers Marlena, the hero from that battle, for 0.99 USD.

Why the author sees it as the only purchase worth making for F2P:
- Marlena is the strongest damage dealer on every server; the paid heroes after her cost about 120 USD and are weaker.
- She can be levelled for free later with the shards the game hands out.
- The pack includes rewards for day 2 and day 3 that help at the start.
- It unlocks her own avatar in your profile: a small thing, but when you join an alliance it shows you are here to stay.
- With Marlena it is easier to get into a top alliance, and without a top alliance an account does not grow.
The author makes no other purchases on this account.
4. The task for day one
Play as long as you can without breaks. Where to spend diamonds and how to get Arthur is covered in the next part of the series.
